HUBE DISCOUNT- ON EXISTING INVENTORY -Walsh County Veterans Service Office Veterans are our Stars There are a quite few military he- roes living amongst us in Walsh County. One of those he- roes, although he won't admit it, is Joseph Espelein, 94, of Park River. Nominated by the American Le- ,gion Auxiliary Unit No. 157 in Lankin, Joe was recently chosen to receive a patriotic picture fiame. The American Legion Auxiliary Depart- ment President Linda Juntunen called upon the ten auxiliary districts across the state to Photo: Katrina Hodny nominate a veteran ill their area to be a No. l Star. Joe belongs to the American Legion Bosh-Ryba Post No. 157 in Lankin, which is in District 2, and has been member for 67 years. "I was very proud that I was selected," said Joe. 'Tm at a loss tbr words." The District 2 President Diane Kramer received twelve entries that in- . cluded a photo and brief history of the veteran fi'om among the 29 aux- iliary units in her district. She had three ladies in her office review them and they all unanimously chose Joe. "As the number one pick, his picture was put into the frame and was on display at the State American Legion Convention in June along with the other nine District wilmers," said Kramer. "There was also a slide show made by the Department President that ran during the convention." Joe was drafted into the Army in October 1942. He went through Ba- sic Combat Training at Camp Claybome, Iowa. He was stationed at Jack- son Banacks with the 165th Combat Regiment awaiting transfer to Nor- mandy, France. He was shipped out on the New Amsterdam and later trans- ferred to a smaller ship that landed on Omaha Beach. Joe fought with the Combat Engineers in France, Belgium, Austria, and Gennany. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. Joe came home to the United States in March 1946 and was discharged with the rank of Buck Corporal. Joe return .ed to North Dako- ta and reunite with his wife, Irene. Irene was very proud of her husband, saying how nice of the Lankin Auxiliary to put in the time and effort nolninating Joe. They will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Christmas Day. According to Kramel; this w .the first time tbr this kind Of honor. :: ,Congratu]ationsJoe!
