NOVEMBER MENU NOT AVAILABLE Park River Family By Alysha Coffmann PARK RIVER, N.D. -- Mov- ing away from my family and community in southern Min- nesota was harder than I expect- ed. Thankfully I had a friend who is now my husband, who lived in Langdon when I moved to Park River. But this article is not meant to be about me. It is about you, the Park River Community. You em- brace, support, and accept me as one of your own. Park River has something spe- cial, a community that doubles as a family. I see this when I take tickets for a volleyball game, shop at the grocery store, visit our neighbor Esther, greet trick-or- treaters at our home, and espe- cially when interacting with stu- dents and their parents at our school. I'm proud to be among such caring and ,compassionate colleagues who put children first. I'm so blessed to take part in this Park River family. The past five years have demonstrated that Park River lives up to its motto, "the Town with a Heart". Editor "s Note: Coffman is a Title 1 Instructor at Park Riv- er Area Schools. Heitkamp Congratula00 Manvd Elementary for National Blue Ribbon School Honor MANVEL, N.D. -- U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today highlighted North Dakota's academic success and congratulated students and teachers at Manvel Elementary School, one of two schools in the state to be recently named a National Blue Ribbon School -an honor given to schools based on aca- demic excellence or significant improvements made in students' academic achievement. Heitkamp read with students ranging from Kinder- garten- 4th grade, held a question-and-answer session with 5th- 8th graders, and reinforced the im- portance.of getting a good education starting at a young age and the opportunities it can provide for students and communities across North Dakota. Heitkamp also presented Manvel Elementary School with an American flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. "Making sure North Dakota's kids get a great ed- ucation starting at a young age is one of the most im- portant and worthwhile investments we can make," said Heitkamp. "Many of us - including me - know that we would not be where we are today if it weren't for an excellent education, an important foundation for future success. I again congratulate the ambitious students of Manvel Elementary School, its dedicat- ed teachers and administrators, and the entire Man- vel community for coming together and devoting so much time, energy, and compassion to earn this hon- or and make a positive impact in the lives of North Dakota's children." Heitkamp announced last month that Manvel El- ementary School and Sweetwater Elementary School in Devils Lake were named 2014 National Blue Rib- bon Schools. Founded in 1982, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private el- ementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant im- provements are being made in students' academic achievement. A National Blue Ribbon Schools flag overhead has become a mark of excellence in edu- cation recognized by everyone from parents to pol- icymakers in thousands of communities. Since the program's founding, the U.S. Department of Edu- cation has bestowed this coveted award on more than 7,000 of America's schools.
