Service Members Group Life Insurance or (SGLI) This life insurance is available to active duty service members and currently serving reserve and national guardsman. It allows for up to $400,000 in $50,000 dollar increments. Rates for this coverage are based off of your desired amount only and age is not a factor. Monthly premiums for $50,000 start at $3.50 per month going up to $28.00 per month for the full $400,000 in coverage. Service members can also cover their eligible dependents for up to $100,000 dollars. Veterans Group Life Insurance or (VGLI) This insurance is similar to VGLI. Once a service member sepa- rates from the armed forces they have up to 1 year and 240 days to convert their SGLI to VGLI. If they convert before 240 days they do not have to answer any health questions. It provides lifetime cover- age as long as you continue to pay your premiums. The premiums with VGLI are based on age but are priced competitively against the market. Service Disabled Veterans insurance or (SDVI) This life insurance provides up to veterans who have a new serv- ice connected disability rating within the last two years. The disabil- ity rating can be at 0% or above in order to quali . The amount of this policy is for a maximum amount up to $10,000 and premiums amounts are based on age and the policy amount. Rates are fairly reasonable. These disabled veterans can also apply for Supplemen- tal Service Disabled Veterans Insurance if desired. Other Insurance Programs There are other Life insurance programs that no longer exist that many veterans have been paying on tbr years. Our office recom- mends that upon the death of the veteran you contact the VA's life in- surance personnel at 1-800-669-8477 to see if your loved one had a policy. It never hurts to check and one would hate to let that that money sit idle for years or perhaps even be recouped by the govern- ment. If you have any questions about this or any other benefit please contact the Walsh County Veterans Service Office at 701-352-5030 or stop by for a visit at 638 Cooper Avenue Suite 5 Grafton, ND 58237. Thank you for your service. Looking Ahead Dear Looking, With the average cost of a full- service funeral running over $10,000 today, many people are seeking alternative options to make their final farewell more aflbrdable. Depending on how you want to go, here are some money saving options to consider. Traditional funeral: If you're interested in a traditional funeral and burial, your first money saving step is to shop around and compare funeral providers, because prices can vary. If you want some help, contact your funeral consumer alliance program. These are volunteer groups that offer infbrmation and prices on local funeral providers. I am L SO thankful that as difficult as it was to say goodbye to my dear husband, Pastor Harvey Jackson, I had the assurance that the moment he closed his eyes in death that he was present with his precious Jesus. Our family will deeply miss their husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. I want to thank the wonderful staff and workers at the Good Samaritan Home for their loving care for our beloved one over the past 3 1/2 years...they became like family to me! The Memorial Service they held in his room after his passing away was very special and comforting to me. I also want to thank Dr. Joel Johnson and Tammy Clementson for their kind care of Harvey's medical needs. Thank you to Pastor David Hinrichs for leading us at the Family Prayer Service Thursday night and thank you to Pastor Mark Antal for leading at the Funeral Serv- ice on Friday morning...also for their visits with Pastor Harvey at the Nursing Home. Thank you to the ladies of Grace Free Lutheran, Edinburg and those from Victory Free Lutheran, Park River for the noon luncheon and for those who brought food to our home. Thank you to the staff of Tollefson Funeral Home for taking care of the funeral arrangements and to everyone who sent flowers, plants and to all those who were able to attend the Prayer Service and the Funeral Service. Since our move here in our retirement, the people of Park River have been so kind to us and continue that now during our griev- ing time. I am so grateful.
