We are only beginning to realize the effects that Agent Orange is having on our veterans and their families. A recent report from Marc Mc- Cabe who is the Bureau Chief/Regional Director of the Vietnam Veter- ans of America has indicated that studies on Agent Orange Exposure in- dicate that Agent Orange is a problem that effects not only the veterans but effects future generations as well. Effects of the Dioxin are passed genetically from the Veteran to their children. Agent Orange has been associated with a diagnosis of everything from certain Cancers to Dia- betes Mellitus type II. The VA assumes that any in country Vietnam vet- eran was exposed to the Dioxin/Herbicide known as agent orange mean- ing the veteran does not have to prove that they were exposed the her- bicide they simply have to prove that they were in Vietnam in order to file a claim for those diseases. The following is a list of Diseases that could be related to Agent Orange Exposure: AL Amyloidosis A rare disease caused when an abnormal protein, amyloid, enters tis- sues or organs Chronic B-cell Leukemias A type of cancer which affects white blood cells Chloracne (or similar acneform disease) A skin condition that occurs soon after exposure to chemicals and looks like common forms of acne seen in teenagers. Under VA's rating regu- lations, it must be at least 10 percent disabling within one year of expo- sure to herbicides. Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 A disease characterized by high blood sugar levels resulting from the body's inability to respond properly to the hormone insulin Hodgkin's Disease A malignant lymphoma (cancer) characterized by progressive en- largement of the lymph nodes, liver, and spleen, and by progressive ane- mia Ischemic Heart Disease A disease characterized by a reduced supply of blood to the heart, that leads to chest pain Multiple Myeloma A cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell in bone marrow Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma A group of cancers that affect the lymph glands and other lymphatic tissue Parkinson's Disease Aprogressive disorder of the nervous system that affects muscle move- Peripheral Neuropathy, Early-Onset A nervous system condition that causes numbness, tingling, and mo- tor weakness. Under VA's rating regulations, it must be at least 10 per- cent disabling within one year of herbicide exposure. Porphyria Cutanea Tarda A disorder characterized by liver dysfunction and by thinning and blis- tering of the skin sun-exposed areas.
