PARK RIVER, ND -- North Dakota's State Land judging contest was held in Walsh County on Aug. 7, and Walsh County contestants ended with another favorable finish. This particular judging contest is designed around fundamental conservation practices, as well as evaluating the soil structure and compo- nents. Walsh County sent 12 4-Hers to the state contest in the junior and senior divisions, coached by Brad Bmmmond. The junior team achieved a third place win and the seniors finished with second place. The senior team finished with a combined score of 919 points but were edged out of the lead by Stark- Billings. Members of the senior team were: Toby Zikmund of Pisek, Taylor Knudson ofDahlen, Kait- lyn Nelson of Grafton, Trevor Knudson of Dahlen, and Britton Bina of Lankin. Members of the junior team earned a team score of 715 points for a third place finish. Members mak- ing up the junior team were: Lilly Bina of Lankin, Jonah Zikmund of Pisek, Sarah Hodek of Fairdale, Owen Zikmund of Pisek, Seth Nelson ofof Graiton, Zack Zikmund of Pisek, and Andrew Myrdahl of Grafton. The Stark-Billings team placed first in the jun- ior division. The Eddy County team placed second in the junior division. This year Walsh County hosted the contest with help of the Walsh County Soil Conservation and the local NRCS. The location of the contest was south east of Adams and four pits were dug for the con- testants to evaluate. The contestants had to indi- vidually assess the land determining soil texture, per- meability, depth, slope, and past erosion, as well as make recommendations for coming years. Each year the national contest is held in Oklahoma City and North Dakota has always been well rep- resented. This contest educates youth on conser- vation practices and methods based on land type.
