A UND football player, he suffered an injury that brought him to his calling -- physical ther- apy. Joe went into the service and ended up in Grand Forks and Lang- don before finding his way to Park River. "1 was going to quit," he said. His plans of leaving the medical field to work on the farm changed when a board member of the hospital asked him to consider making a different type of transition. "'He said 'Joe you know we're looking for a physical therapist in Park River.'" Karas went in to the hospital and talked "duties and salaries and stuff" but when he looked up and saw the crucifix on the wall, that was when he decided that this was the place for him. "No one's ever asked me to take it down," he said gesturing at the cross that still hangs there today. "It leaves kind of an idea of what it's like working here It isn't all dol- lars and cents," he said. "I think we care about how the people feel." He said through his time at First Care he has met and worked with wonderful people, both patients and staff. Ruth Jelinek, FCHC marketing coordinator, has a friendly rivalry with Karas. He is a UND fan and she is an NDSU fan. The banter is endless. She jokes that though the list is small, he is one of her favorite UND football players. "We're going to be sad when he leaves because he is our resident hu- morist," she said. For his 50th birthday, Jelinek said, they had the staff gather to- gether for an announcement of the new CHO of First Care Health Cen- ter. "I got a promotion," he laughed, "Chief Humor Officer." "! just love working here, but it's time to do something else," he said.
