The Press was awarded the Sweepstakes award for small weekly newspapers by earning 2900 points ac- cumulated through 27 first places, 2 second places, 1 third places and 0 honorable mentions for work done in 2017. Among those first place honors were special awards for General Excellence, Overall Design Excellence, and Photo of the Year for photographer Larry Biri. General Excellence submissions are judged on news coverage, feature stories, news editing, photog- raphy and cutlines, headlines and makeup, editorial page, advertising, typography and design and overall prod- uct. For General Excellence, the judge's comment about the Walsh County Press was as follows: 'q'he newspaper stood out with large photos and content that showcased an explanatory story on toxic algae and a folksy fea- ture on a longtime local barber." For small weeklies second place went to The Mountrail County Record in Parshall; third to the Billings County Pioneer in Medora; and honorable men- tion to the New Town News. OveraU Design Excellence submissions are judged on the basis of layout, design, use of photos, headlines and body type, reproduction quality, overall appearance and imagination. For small weeklies second place went to Medora, Billings County Pioneer; third to Drayton, Valley News & Views. The photograph Larry Biri took at the Walsh County Fair of Jaylie Woods and her horse, Mari- ah, silhouetted in the fair barn earned first place out of all of the weekly newspapers in the state. The judge's comment was as follows: "A pensive mo- ment between a girl and her horse, perfectly silhouet- ted by the sun outside the barn prior to a competition. So sharp and crisp that it almost doesn't look real! Nice." The Press finished the awards competition with a well-rounded showing in the News, Photography, and Advertising categories.
