PAGE 10 THE PRESS MAY 11, 2011 Taking a look at days past in Walsh County Left: This picture was taken years ago at the Hoople depot. It has been sent in by Joyce (Fedje) Olson of Hoople, N.D. The man sit- ting on the platform is my grandfather, Jim Travers, father of my mother Lily (Travers) Fredje. The man precariously sprawled on the tracks was Ernie DeSautel, the drayman in Hoople. What he is doing is putting his ear on the rail, allowing him to hear how close the train was to Hoople, so he could get his truck backed up ready to get freight off that was to go to designated places. My Grandfa- ther (Jim) was there to pick up mail to deliver to the post office. The mail was in large bags that he loaded onto his two wheeled cart that hepushed to the office. The mail came on the Galloping Goose branch line train. I (Joyce) and other jr. high school stu- dents used to travel to basketball tournaments in Cavalier. It was an inexpensive way for us to travel-15 cents per person. Joyce has a brother, Lyle Fedje of Cavalier (formerly of Hoople) and two sisters, Geraldine (Fredje) Hagen, Grommesh, Fargo, N.D. and Earlyce (Fedje) Pladson, Moorhead, iN. They also were former Hoople High School students-the "Hoople Spuds." Bottom left: In 1950 the snow did not start thawing till May 22nd or 23rd and the farmers did not start seeding till June 1. The crops turned out really well. The children in the photo are Barbara Ann (Jarolimek) Kachena, Audry (Jarolimek) Kadlec and Delores (Jarolimek) Dub. Bottom right: A postcard shows the early days of Hoople residences on Myrtle Ave. (Photos: Submitted) .=_ \\; J 0at your grad a card they can really use.[ 0raduahon ,sa greal hme for Cenex 0if! cards!.,00 Give your graduate the gift travel, food or anything inside the store by using a Cenex Gift Card!
