I have wondered about it many times, has any one got an-answer or even a clue? I doubt if anyone has the answer; but never the less this dream bar recipe is an old-time favorite that Mother use to make. Dream Bars 1/2 C. butter 1/4 C. brown sugar 1 1/4 C. sifted flour 1 1/4 C. brown sugar t/8 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking powder 2 Tbsp. flour 1 egg 1 C. chipped dates 1 C. chopped nuts (optional) Combine first three ingredients. Place in a 9 inch pan and bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes. Mix the sugar, salt and baking powder, flour and eggs, fold in dates and nuts. Spread over baked mixture and bake at 325 degrees for 40 minutes. Cut into squares while warm. Date Bars 1/2 C. brown sugar 1 C. oatmeal 2 C. flour 1 C. melted margarine 1 C. hot water 1 C. cut-up dates 1 C. sugar Mix a crumbly mixture of the first four ingredients. Put all but 1 cup of crumbs on the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch pan. Cook cut-up pieces of dates with sugar and water a short time; cool and spread over crumbs. Sprinkle top with the one cup of crumbs you saved. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Cut while warm. Applesauce Bars 1 1/2 C. sugar 1/2 C. margarine 1 egg, beaten 1 1/2 C. applesauce, unsweetened Salt to taste 2 C. flour 2 tsp. soda 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/4. tsp. cloves 1/4. tsp. nutmeg 1 C. raisins Crrme sugar and margarine, add beaten egg and mix. Add applesauce. Sift flour, soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and salt together and mix with all ingredients until well blended. Last add raisins, mix. Put on a large cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees tbr t/2 an hour; frost with a powdered sugar frosting. Taffy Bars 1 /2 C. butter (do not substitute) 1 C. Crisco 1 C. brown sugar, packed 1 egg yolk 2 C. flour 1 tsp. vanilla . Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Put 3 1/2 Hershey bars on top and spread while hot. Ginger Creams 1 /2 C. sugar 1 /2 C. molasses l tsp. ginger 1 /2 C. margarine, softened I egg 1 C. boiling water 1 tsp. soda 1/2 C. flour Mix all ingredients and bake on a large cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Frost when cool and cut into squares.
