BUTTE, Mont.- Paul En-
gstrom, great-grandson of Nettle
Greicar from Pisek, has been named
The National Association of Inter-
collegiate Athletics (NAIA) Schol-
ar-Athlete. In total across the nation,
fory eight Division I Men's Bas-
ketball student-athletes were chosen
tbr the 2015 group. In order to be
nominated by an institution's head
coach or sports information direc-
tor, a student-athlete must maintain
a minimum grade point average of
3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have
achieved junior academic status.
Paul plays for the Montana Tech
men's basketball team in Butte,
Montana. His grandparents, Joe and
Lorraine (Greicar) Trouba, have
traveled to watch Paul play, a 1200
mile round-trip journey. Over lbur
months and 33 games, his parents,
David and Cathy (Trouba) En-
gstrom, have missed only two
gaines. Their car has logged over
25,000 miles just traveling to bas-
ketball games. On several out of
town trips, Paul would find quiet

with his studies. He is majoring in
Biomedical Sciences/Pre-Med. En-
tering his fifth year of college and
with One more basketball season to
go, (he red-shirted his freshman
year), a majority of time will be
spent studying for his MCAT's, the
entrance exam for medical school.
Paul's research project last sum-
mer took place on his parent's farm
near Reserve, Mont. It involved
testing mice for the Hantavirus
disease. Mice were caught every
two weeks for three continuous
days. One hunched and four traps
were placed around grain bins,
barns, tree rows, and grain piles. On
the first day e.very mouse was test-
ed for the virus by extracting blood
from a capillary in the eye. This
blood was then frozen and tested at
the Montana Tech lab .irt the fall
The mouse was also weighed.
checked for scars, gender, and
tagged. All of the infonnation was
recorded and analyzed. On the sec-
ond and third day, if a tagged
mouse was recaptured, it was re-
leased automatically. Typically
25-35 mice were caught in a day.
More than 300 samples were ana-
• lyzed and several tested positive for
the disease. These results changed
the way Paul and his family clean
out grain bins, more cautiously
now with safety precautions in
place.
