Walsh County holds annual 4-H Project winners named
PARK RIVER, ND -- The 2014 Walsh
County 4-H Project Expo was held Friday,
March 14th in Park River. There were 42 proj-
ects on display, representing the different inter-
ests of Walsh County 4-Hers.
In this event, 4-H members set up an educa-
tional display tb "tell a story" about a 4-H proj-
ect they are enrolled in, and then are questioned
by judges on their knowledge of the subject.
Walsh County 4-H'ers creatively represented
projects from hermit crabs, archery safety and rab-
bit care to foods, science discovery, crafts,
woodworking and horticulture.
The following youth received high honors in
their category. Winners will advance to the State
Fair competition in July.
8-9 Year Olds:
Grand Champion: Owen Zikmund, Pisek
Reserve Champion: Greta Schuster, Grafion
Honorable Mentions: John Beneda, Park Riv-

Participants and attendees also voted on their
favorite exhibit. The winner of the People's
Choice Award was Beatrice Kjelland, Park Riv-
er, for Bea's Barefoot Bling. Beatrice received
an iTunes gift card for her honor.
Serving as judges were Cheryl Osowski,
Graflon; Pat Hinkle, and Samantha l_ahman, Cav-
alier; Rachel Lundquist, Adams; Katelyn Hain,
Park River and Fem Magenau, Hamilton.
Walsh County 4-H has over 130 members
county-wide. The 4-H program is a youth edu-
cation component of the NDSU Extension
Service.

Midway student named North Dakota State Geographic Bee semifinalist
BISMARCK, N.D. -- Juan D.
V-tllanueva, a Midway Public School
fifth grader, has been notified by the
National Geographic Society that he
is one of the semifinalists eligible to
compete in the 2014 North Dako-
ta S @eographic Bee sponsored
by Gdg'l and Plum Creek.
Fourth through eighth grade stu-
dents throughout the state compet-
ed to determine each school's Bee
winner. School-level winners then
took a qualifying test, which they
submitted to the National Geo-
graphic Society. The National Ge-
ographic Society invited the students
with the top 100 scores in each of
the 50 states, District of Columbia,
Department of Defense Dependents
Schools and U.S. territories to com-
pete at the state level.
The 2014 North Dakota State
Geographic Bee will be held at the
University of Mary in Bismarck on
Dakota in the National Geograph-
ic Bee finals to be held at National
Geographic Society headquarters,
May 19-21, 2014.
The national winner will receive
a $50,000 college scholarship and
