UND hosts Regional Sdence
and Engineering Fair
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The 55th annual Northeast Regional Sci-
ence and Engineering Fair will be held Wednesday, March 13, from
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University of North Dakota Memorial Union
Ballroom. The fair has 160, 5-12 grade students presenting their re-
search projects in biology, chemistry, engineering, behavioral sciences,
and mathematics, among others. Schools participating are Lakota, Dako-
ta Prairie, Valley-Edinburg, Park River, and Adams-Edmore. Grand
Forks students are from Red River High School and Schroeder, Val-
ley and South Middle Schools.
Sixteen junior division and 16 senior division projects along with
winners from the other regional fairs will advance to the State Science
and Engifieering Fair, also hosted at UND, April 4-5. Top students from
the state fair advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair.
To increase student participation, fees for the regional fair were paid
by a joint UND and North Dakota State University program: the North
Dakota IDeA (Institutional Development Award) Network of Biomedical
Research Excellence (INBRE), which is administered by the UND
School of Medicine and Health Sciences in collaboration with North
Dakota State University. The immediate goal is to stimulate the de-
velopment of science, technology, engineering and math education by
supporting the ability of all 5-12 grade students who wish to partici-
pate and compete in their regional fairs and the ND State Science and
Engineering Fair. This will ultimately increase the number of North
Dakota students entering the technical, educational and health pro-
fessional workforce pipeline in the state.

Green Eggs and Ham in I st Grade!
By Kristi Olson
This past Friday the 1 st graders
celebrated Reading Month_and Dr.
Seuss' birthday by having green
eggs and ham! Many of the stu-
dents thought they would not like
eggs and ham but, Once they
took the first bite, they were sur-
prised that they DID like green
eggs and ham!
Having green eggs and ham is
a tradition for the I st graders.
Each March, around Dr. Seuss'
birthday, a few kind women (Deb
Anderson, Karl Helgoe, and more)
come in early, cook up a yummy
breakfast and await the excited
first graders. It is always a hap-
py start to the day for the students
and the teachers!
This year we had two wonder-
ful high school students come
