Compensation claims can be as simple as mild hearing loss or as
severe PTSD to missing an arm or leg; however, most veterans are
unsure if they should be filing a claim or not.
If yourself, or a relative, served any length of time in the military,
determine if a trip to sick call was made. Does that ailment still bother
today? You may have a claim.
For older vets, hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the
ear) are very common. Hearing protection was nowhere near where
it is today and older vets are now paying for it. Hearing aids are
expensive and easy to avoid. If you served around heavy artillery, on
the flight line, or were in many firefights or explosions, and the
hearing loss or ringing was not present before service, you may have
a claim.
There are also cases where a veteran may have had an inju/y or
condition upon entering the service and it only got worse while
serving. This is referred to as aggravated in service. The most
important part with this situation is medical evidence. The claim has
the best chance of being successful when the conditions are recorded
before and after and from then to now.
The VA has made several leaps and bounds in veterans' benefits.
One situation in particular is Vietnam Era Veterans. If you or
someone you know ever set foot in-country and have been diagnosed
with any of the following conditions, you have a claim.
• "Acute and Subacute Transient Peripheral Neuropathy, Chloracne,
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Diabetes Mellitus (Type 2),
Hodgkin*s Disease, Myeloma, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Porphyria
Cutanea Tarda, Prostate Cancer, Respiratory Cancers, Soft Tissue
Sarcoma (other than Osteosarcoma, Chondrosarcoma, Kap0si's
sarcoma, or Mesothelioma), AL Amyloidosis, B-cell (or hairy-cell)
leukemia, Parkinson's disease and ischemic heart disease.
In the event you would like to check and see if you have a claim,
please call the Walsh County Veterans Service Officer (CVSO),
Katrina Hodny, at 352-5030 to make an appointment.
More information can be found at http://www.va.gov and the Walsh
CVSO web site at http://www.walshcountynd.com/veteran.
