Page I 0 THE WALSH COUNTY PRESS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 2018 By Jesse Irvine For The Press PARK RIVER, N.D. -- The Park River Red Ma- chine Squirt team played in the Squirt International B Tournament held in Fargo, Feb. 8 - 1 l. The tournament featured 64 teams from all over the United States and Canada. Park River started the tournament Friday morning by taking on the St. Paul Capitals. Park River didn't hes- itate in letting the field know that they came to play Red Machine hockey. The team scored 4 goals in the 1st pe- riod to take a 4-0 lead going into the 2nd period. The Red Machine never looked back as they took an 8-1 vic- tory to open the tournament. James Larson led the team, scoring 5 goals in the opening round. Hermantown was the next team up for our boys. This game was a nail biter all the way through. Hermantown scored the 1st goal of the game with 9.3 seconds re- maining in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead. Park River worked their way back with Noah Troftgruben scoring back to back goals 3 minutes apart in the 2nd. The Red Machine took a 2-1 lead going into the final perioci scoring a goal :45 seconds into -tlae period and added another just 27 seconds later to stake themselves to a 3-2 lead with 10:43 left to play. Larson would even the score up 2 minutes later to tie things up at 3 apiece. Troftgruben scored t.he game winning goal with 4:38 remaining in the game and complbted a hat trick in the process. Herrnantown had some good chances to even things up but Aidan Rost stood tall in goal thwarting any change of Hermantown tying the game. Rost post- ed 25 save in the victory. Saturday play saw the Red Machine taking on the South Winnipeg Kings. Larson opened the scoring :57 into the 1st period and Gavin LaMont added a goal with Photo: Brook Dahlgren Above: Front (L-R) William Munoz, Quintin Bourbanis Carter, James Larson, Trace Anderson, Drake Gire, Jar- rett Rudnik. Park River never looked back with Xander Dahlgren, Lars0n and LaMont all put- ring the puck in the net in the 2nd. The Red Machine skated to a 5-1 victory and found themselves in the quar- terfinals on Saturday night. Park River ran into a buzz saw when they met up with Arizona Hockey Union. Arizona put in 4 goals in the Jameson Erovick 2G opening 5 minutes of the 1st. They would tally one more with 2 minutes left to go up 5-0. Park River worked hard but fell short eventually losing 8-1. Arizona went on to win their final two games and win the championship. Sunday morning found the Red Machine playing the Grand Forks Warriors. Park River wanted to redeem themselves after their previous loss. Larson staked them to a 1-0 lead and Park River never let offthe gas. Park River added a goal in the 2nd period and 3 more in the 3rd period to take home the 5-0 victory. The Park Riv- er Red Machine dominated play as Rost only had to make 5 saves to post the shutout victory. The victory gave the Park River Squirts a tie for fifth place. This is a huge success as this is one of the largest and most competitive Squirt tournaments held in the United States. The Park River Red Machine head coach is Eric Ku hn. He is assisted by Brandon Larson and Justin Lindell.
