GRAFTON, N.D. -- The 2017 Walsh/Pembina County MathCounts com- petition was held Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Walsh County Courthouse. The team from Cavalier, coached by Alex Holen, took first place for Pembina County. Team members included Natalie Hunter, daughter of Chris and Becky Hunter, Carsen Lindsay, son of Margaux and Shawn Lindsay, Kaia Schluchter, daughter of Kent and Lori Schluchter, and Maya Sumra, daughter of Inna and Vinder Sumra. The team from Valley-Edinburg, coached by Daniel Quinn, won second place for Pembina County. Team members included Tyson Backer, son of Les Backer and Martha Fedje, Chloe Gemmill, daughter of Ron and Jeanette Gemmill, Jordan Labinel son ofJon Labine and Jenn Jorgensen, and Wyatt Sobolik, son of Joe and Kris Sobo- lik. Individual winners were: First Place - Carsen Lindsay, Cavalier, Second Place - Natalie Hunter, Cavalier and Third Place - Dan Hinkle, son of Sara and Jason Hinkle of Cavalier. This scholarship was created in loving memory of Kelsey Mae Misialek that had a dream of becoming an orthopedic surgeon but was tragically killed on June 26, 2012 at the age of 15 years old.
