MUNITY THE WALSH COUNTY PRESS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 20 7 By Kirby K. Brandhagen Yesterday I sat by the bed of a dying man Trying to hang on to his life, the best he can He couldn't see me too well, and words I had to repeat But his memory still worked, as he brought up memories so sweet Stories of my Dad, for whom he once worked As he talked about him, his spirits up perked He had told me some of these stories before But I didn't fail, to enjoy them once more Said he wanted something with caffeine to drink So to the nurse's stations, I went in a blink They told me they would bring something quick So I returned to his room, and around him did stick We kept on talking and soon a diet cola did arrive He started to drink it, and for a minute seemed to thrive We both spent our lives, running movie theatres Also working other jobs in order to pay for some features In fact he had spent years at the hospital, maintenance working But now he lay in it, recounting how he kept boilers and such, perk- ing Running movies at the "Lyric", every weekend Trying to be sure, its life would not end Supporting it sometimes with personal funds, from farm and job Always ready to pay Paul, with money that from Peter he did rob Soon the theatre man from Grafton came in to him see With his lady friend along, he joined Marvin and me Marvin had always been partial to Hershey bars, they brought one to him The lady friend broke the bar into sections and Marvin did eat them We all visited for quite awhile and then I had to leave Touching Marvin's arm saying, "Get Better", I believe He did not answer right away, but then said, 'Tll try" Then I went out the door saying good bye This morning a call from the theatre man at Grafton Telling me, the marquee lights were no longer on Good bye Marvin, thanks for all the equipment knowledge Your advice helped me more than once, I do acknowledge And all the stories of theatremen from the past I have to say, hearing them, was for me, more than a blast Especially the one, when a ghost car, my Dad had passed You wondered, if at the wheel, he had been sleeping fast Knowing my Dad's sense of humor, he could have been messing with you Or maybe he really thought, around a car he flew Then the one about a former "Lyric" owner and operator Who locked a film salesman out, becausehe was not a cooperator But thanks most, Marvin, for keeping the "Lyric" going During the tough times, when theatres, big and small, were closing You so loved the business, that even when the bloom, off the rose came You kept on loving and running the theatre, just the same Keeping it from turning into a ghost building, with memories full So it was still around when the town, for it, decided to pull Old theatre men never die, their reels just run out, you see No longer able to be rewound, the bottom magazine running free Editor's Note: Brandhagen is the owner operator of the Cavalier Cinema. \.
