Baier, age 73 of St. Thomas, ND passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at his home in St. Thomas. Leroy F. Baier was born September 4, 1938 in Drayton, ND, the son of Evelyn (Torrey) Baier and the late Ferdinand Baier. He attended school in Kempton, ND, Warren, MN and Fordville, ND. He entered the U.S. Navy on June 9, 1959, serving all over the world. He was united in marriage to Darla Pfannsmith and had two children: Lynn and Tammy. He later married Marietta Maddlena and together they had one child Matthew and step-daughters Karen and Barbara. He returned to the Fordville area where he worked various jobs in the area and was currently working for Altendorf Trucking. He was united in marriage to Lorene (Ness) Trenda on June 21, 2002 in Grand Forks, ND. The couple made their home in St. Thomas where he resided until the time of his death. Leroy loved spending time with his family and his friends at the cafe. He loved visiting with people and loved his dogs Peanut and Bandit. He loved all things NASCAR. Leroy was very instrumental in establishing the Veterans Memorial Garden in St. Thomas. Leroy was a member of the St. John&apos;s Lutheran Church, St. Baier, St. daughters: Gbainyee), Thomas, the Ottum-Ball American Legion Post #168 and was the current commander, he was mayor of St. Thomas until he had to resign due to his declining health, and he served on the city council. He is survived by his wife Lorene Thomas, ND; step Lisa Trenda (Aaron Fargo, ND; Karl (Bill) Steffen, Fargo, ND; ten grandchildren, including Izabella and Matthew Steffen, Fargo, ND; mother Evelyn Baier, Park River, ND; brother Roger (Linda) Baier, Mayville, ND. He was preceded in death by his father Ferdinand and half sister Carol Carlson. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 10:30 AM at the St. John's Lutheran Church, St Thomas, ND. Visitation was Friday from 5-7 with at prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Interment will be at the Bruce Cemetery, Cavalier, ND. Military rites will be provided by the Ottum-Ball American Legion Post #168 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Olson Verna E. Olson, age 93 of Edinburg, ND, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the First Care Health Center of Park River, ND. Verna Eleanor Hilde was born Au- gust 9, 1918 in Dewey Township, Walsh County, the daughter of the late Peter and Ellen (Bergstrom) Hilde. She grew up on the family farm and attended the local rural school and graduated from Fairdale High School in 1937. She then attended Mayville State Teacher's College for 2 years earning her Standard Teaching Certificate. She taught in sev- eral rural Walsh County Schools. She moved to Edinburg in 1942 and taught at the Edinburg School for 3 years. While living in Edinburg, she met Kasper Olson, whom she married on August 26, 1945 at the Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church of Fairdale. They lived and farmed on the Olson Family Farm in Tiber Township. There they raised their family of 3 chil- dren. In 1961 she returned to the teaching profession. She taught at the Park River Elementary School for 10 years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Trin- ity Lutheran Church in Edinburg. She taught Sunday school and was an active member of the Trinity WELCA. She was a char- ter member of Forever Young Senior Citizen's Club where she held the office of President for many years. She was also a member of the Northeast ND Re- tired Teachers As- sociation. She en- joyed bingo, quilting, and bowling. She loved music, espe- cially old time dance music. In 2007 she moved into the Borg Pioneer Me- morial Home in Mountain, living there until April 1, 2011 when she moved into the Good Samar- itan Center of Park River. Verna is survived by her three children: Kay (David) Johnson, New Lenox, IL, Mary (Bill) Mitchell, Thompson, ND, and Kenneth Olson, Edinburg, ND. She is also survived by 5 grand- children, 4 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was the last sur- viving member of her immedi- ate family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kasper, who passed away in 1983, brother Juel Hilde, and sis- ter Inez Hjelmstad. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Edinburg. Visitation was on Tuesday from 5-7 with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Edinburg. Interment will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Edinburg, ND.
